  • The other angle is the majority of Devs are just… Not good…

A good Dev in the situation you mention will design the solution needed now not the one you hope for later.

I’m saying this as someone who has been mired in scope creep and over engineering solutions many times in my life because “what if 5000 people need to use it at once?!”

In most cases all you need is a database, a single thread and a simple API. Build it and then as the problems come grow with them. Try to take into account issues of scale but realize you can’t and shouldn’t solve every scenario because there are too many variables which may never exist.

  • Anecdotal but in my career in corporate this has been the order of operations

    1. Employees get any old equipment free if asked
    2. Employees can pay for any old equipment if asked at a reduced cost
    3. Employees can’t get any old equipment

The reason was they company wasn’t getting any benefit to give away the equipment. Then it was too much of a hassle to write paperwork for the sales which are then used to write down refreshes. Then they just blanket sold to another company which as an employee you then have to engage but with no discounts.

These big businesses make money hands over feet but god forbid they let Joe Employee keep his old laptop for his kid as an unofficial perk of working there.

  • In Canada and something similar. My aunt got breast cancer and my mum has since been diagnosed with leukemia. Of all the stresses they have dealt with, money has never been one of the things.

It’s absolutely cruel that we would do that to a human being in such a tough time. Why any nation would prioritize profit over someone’s well being is beyond me.

That said, Canada isn’t perfect either my son is diabetic and we still have a lot of profit inducing flaws. It’s just when you compare them with “the greatest country in the world”… Well nothing really compares.

Edit - changed pancreatic cancer to leukemia. No idea why my brain wasn’t working this morning. Point being fuck the BRCA2 mutation.

  • The code on SO is rarely specific to what the use case is IMHO. Any code I’ve gotten from there has had to be reworked to fit into what I’m doing. Plus I can’t post some stuff on SO because of legal reasons but can on an internal ChatGPT portal.

Trust me, it’s gonna get a lot worse.

Matter of fact, I look forward to the security breaches of developers posting company code into ChatGPT for help lol. We already had that issue with idiots posting company code into the public GitHub.

  • To further the thought experiment. I digitize my Blu-ray and put it on a private tracker to share with ONLY my friends. Is that piracy?

Copywrite laws are antiquated at best and need to be destroyed at worst.

If you need more proof look at bullshit like how Paramount+ until recently couldn’t show flagship shows like Picard in Canada because the rights were given to Crave.

So as a consumer I want to go to the owner of the property and I can’t watch it because the owner told me they gave a copy of it to someone else.
