    The optimal design is unlikely to be a straightforward modification of an older chip.

    Even if it were, modification would add more variables, where we’re constrained by yields today.

    And our processes today aren’t designed for it.

    EDIT: That being said, you might be able to repurpose an older chip in a piece of electronics that uses multiple chips in a situation where you’re unable to get the older chip for some reason. I can’t think of many scenarios where that’d be economical, but hobbyists have certainly reused components from older electronic devices.

    I normally go for Regeneration just because (a) it’s so much of a pain in the butt to deal with fungal infections, and just at level 1, the mutation makes it mathematically extremely unlikely for incubation to complete and (b) gamma moths can inflict mutating and at level 5 or above, Regeneration has a reasonable chance of curing it before it completes incubation. Level 9 and it becomes very unlikely, though that’s a lot of points to spend.

    Level 5 Regeneration has a 2% chance of curing a major debuff per turn. Mutating has a short incubation period, 100 turns. So your chance of incubation succeeding at level 5 is 0.98¹⁰⁰, or about 13.3%.

    At Level 9, it has a 4% chance per turn. So the chance of completion of incubation of mutating goes down to ~1.7%. And there’s a small chance that mutating will have a beneficial effect even if it completes.

    There are a few other ways of dealing with mutating, like becoming friendly with the insects faction to keep gamma moths onside or building a character that can stay out-of-phase, and I imagine a character with a high DV might also work.

    Wine isn’t the rarest and most expensive liquid. It is more expensive than water, four times by volume. You can easily get it at the Six Day Stilt.

    Cloning draught is the most expensive liquid, 1250 times the value of water by volume. Once you have one dram of it and a gyrocopter backpack (which can contain 128 drams of it), a late game strategy — tedious though effective — is to farm metamorphic polygel. Various merchants, especially Tillifergaewicz at Yd Freehold, have a (small) chance to stock polygel. Polygel can be used to duplicate any item in the game. Cloning draught can duplicate any character in the game, including Tillifergaewicz, effectively increasing the chance of polygel being available when you visit Yd Freehold after a restock. Once you have a metamorphic polygel, you can duplicate a container and all of the liquid it contains, such as a gyrocopter backpack and all of the liquid in it. If you have two containers partially full of liquid, you can pour all of one container into another (well, except for neutron flux, which requires special handling). It takes 7 doublings to turn one dram of cloning draught into 128, enough to completely fill a gyrocopter backpack.

    Once a polygel farm is up, you have effectively infinite money, an infinite supply of any item that you can obtain one of in the game, and an infinite supply of any character in the game.

    In an order filed on Monday, Sharion Aycock, a senior U.S. District Court judge, wrote that the four lawyers had violated Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure when they certified that the information in their filings was factual.

    I think one concerning thing is that this is the easiest thing to check. I mean, at some point, I assume that someone is going to rig something up to LexisNexis to actually validate the existence of cited cases, because that’s pretty simple and mechanical. Heck, even those lawyers, even if they don’t have any tech people at their fingertips, could have had a paralegal check citations or something. It really shouldn’t be that fundamentally hard for a lawyer to avoid getting in trouble for this specific issue, even if they generated the text with an LLM.

    My bigger concern is that if lawyers are willing to put stuff like this out, they’re presumably also willing to put out information that hasn’t been checked where the errors are subtler and it’s harder to find erroneous material. In the case of citing nonexistent cases, it’s really easy to say “the lawyer clearly didn’t even look at this”, because it’s hard to make that kind of error if you have read over it. This is, once highlighted, flagrant and obvious. But…there’s potential for subtler errors, where it’s harder to tell whether the lawyer did at least try to review the material and just made a basic error, and thus it’s harder to impose punishments for it.

  • For a given user, I suppose that depends largely upon whether what a given end user wants to use character.ai for is copyrighted characters.

    EDIT: I’d also add that copyrighting of characters and settings is something of a pet peeve of mine. Historically, many of our great works, like, say, the collection of literature dealing with Greek mythology or around Robin Hood or that sort of thing relied on many unaffiliated authors being able to write about the same set of characters and in the same settings.

    But most copyright holders don’t permit that. H. P. Lovecraft was something of an exception, which is why you see so much Cthulhu stuff in random places.

    I do think that if you’re Disney, you should have some route to make it clear that you are the original-rights-holder to, say, the Star Wars IP, so that someone else can’t pass off their work as canon as being endorsed by them. You should have some way to distinctly identify yourself, maybe via use of trademark. But I also have grave doubts that we would be unable to fund the creation of fictional works if characters and settings had a fair use exemption, so that a third party was guaranteed the ability to be able to create works in the same fictional universe.

    I’ve had some similar comments about Windows in the past. Like, a lot of the lock-in value that Microsoft enjoys isn’t anything special that they’ve done — it’s because people are expert in using their platform. If you make them change their workflow, you throw that out. And people profoundly dislike changing their workflow, once they’ve put the effort in to become accustomed to one.

    If you can install OpenWrt, you can probably get ahold of hardware that can run OpenWrt.

    OpenWrt provides regular bug fixes and security updates even for devices that are no longer supported by their manufacturers.
