To be fair Kubernetes creates copies of the things it drops into the ocean to replace them as fast as they’re lost.

Welcome to graphQL. The REST abstraction few need, but everyone wants for some reason.
So they’ve issued almost half the possible numbers, current US population is actively using 1/3rd of them. I think unless there is a major drop in birth rates “several generations” is two. Either my great grandkids will be reusing dead people SSNs or there will be 10 digit numbers which is going to be a problem for any systems that coded it as char(9).

7·1 year agoIt’s such a good idea at the base level. Reputation allows additional privilege so that the people who know the most on a topic can contribute more than screaming idiots. But the lust for a higher rep score drives toxic behavior. Thus you get people in control that know how to game the system not the actual experts. I’ve had great experiences in that site, and I’ve had terrible ones. Most the great ones are because I joined in the very early days and we were really all trying to help each other. As the rep addicts took over, I bailed. By that point there were you tube tutorials to fill the gap. I’m nostalgic for what that site was. It’s very sad to see what it became.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•IPhones' default photo format is HEIC, something that Windows doesn't open by default.English
6·1 year agoIt’s a 32 year old format that makes pictures worse in order to save space. A lot changes in the tech works in 30 years. While there may be nothing inherently wrong with it, there’s far better image encoding algorithms these days that can store images in less space without reducing the quality as much.

Programmer Humor@lemmy.ml•question, When were programmers supposed to be obsolete?
46·1 year agoSalesforce advertised “No more developers” for awhile in the mid 2010s. It was great fun trying to clean up the mess all the “not programmers” made of those systems. I really hate Salesforce. They must have some of the best sales people on the planet.
Were you using dish soap like what gets bubbly in your sink? Or dishwasher detergent which does not get bubbly. Dishwasher detergent will probably be fine in a washing machine, same as your dish washer because it’s not supposed to foam up. But the soap you use in your sink will have terrible consequences in either a dish washer or washing machine.

9·2 years agoWhat’s the target use case for this? It seems too small to be useful as a laptop replacement, and isn’t really mobile without cellular radios. About the only purpose I can see is replacing pagers that are still used in medical facilities.
How’s the view up there on your high horse?

Programming@programming.dev•Best way to gain experience as a CS student?
2·2 years agoGetting a job is a multi stage battle. Options 1, 2, and 3.5 won’t get you past the first stage, the inept HR screener. Doesn’t matter if it’s an entry level job, your resume looks worse to them than anyone with any professional experience. Option 3 kinda works for it, but even better would be an internship or two. That looks like real experience to the HR monkeys. Once you slay them, now you’re to the manager resume screen. This is where options 1 and 2, and maybe 3.5 can help. Score an interview with them, then it’s up to your shining personality to get you the rest of the way.
Every job in the industry has hundreds of applicants these days. It’s no longer enough that your resume meets the requirements, it’s got to actually compete. Since most jobs allow remote these days, it’s got to compete on a national or even international scale. Apply to on-site or hybrid roles to limit the market of competition. Make sure your resume screams that you’re better than the rest.
Good luck!

Technology@beehaw.org•The Paradox of Blackmarket Wired Bluetooth Apple Headphones
23·2 years agoDoes he want to take a budget option away? At one point he says “And they still charge $12” to me that says that’s close to what proper wired earbuds should cost. People are getting screwed buying something that should have higher sound quality and getting the cheapest Bluetooth quality instead.
One project I worked on had 10 different languages. That was rough. But even your basic full stack web application is usually 5 languages: SQL, a backend language, HTML, CSS and JS. Usually some wheel reinventing frameworks thrown in for good measure. 5 languages is light these days.

Risa@startrek.website•I just rewatched Discovery. Does anyone else think this jump in the timeline is too jarring?English
51·2 years agoHistorical ships named Enterprise. There are really only the two in your pic if your timeline doesn’t have a Star Trek show, which is weirdly paradoxical considering the shuttle was named after the TV show. So in the Star Trek timeline I guess the shuttle is named after the sailing ship for some reason.
The average truck buyer is looking for something that can do everything. Seating for the whole family, comfortable for trips across town or aria the country, able to pull a trailer and carry a load. Enough luxury to enjoy the drive.
This truck is for businesses. Construction or last mile delivery. Enough room for just the people necessary to load or unload it. No comfort features besides the bare minimum. No long range driving.
I expect to see these in fleet yards, not in driveways.
