  • I did it for a few years, and blew through all my savings in the process.

Had to start an actual business, LLC, and deal with all the parts that as an engineer I absolutely hate.

Had done about 15 years in the industry with a small tech company, had all the skills, leads, etc, and wanted to do it on my own.

Way underestimated how much time and effort the running of a business part takes, and while I had projects, I didn’t have the time to do them right, payment was always late so my profit shrank, and I burned out in two years.

Hired an admin to help with managing the projects and clients, but it was too little too late.

I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m saying be sure to have all those other elements well in place, cause the actual time spent programming was pretty small.

In the end I took a role as the on site guy for a very large company, making decent money, and I’m back doing the parts I enjoy.

    Best of luck to you.

  • Can you put an ingest test on your systems?

Throw a flag when the JSON breaks etc and track those metrics.

If they are breaking production services, they sure wouldn’t last long on any of the teams I work with.

This 100% is a management issue, both their boss, and yours.

If resources are going from one team to another, and they have separate management, that damn well better be coordinated through your boss. At the very least C.C. at the start and end of the project.

I’m all for helping out another team, that’s what you do, but sounds more like constantly cleaning up their messes.

  • I only have it on PS4, and yes there are lots of mods in the workshop. There are obviously limitations.

Every few months I try installing various mods to make what I want out of it, darker nights, flashlight mod, weapon and armour changes for a more hard core experience, etc, and end up with 15 or so mods installed.

Start a new hardcore mode, get just about past diamond city, and the game invariably starts crashing.

No idea which one or ones are causing the issue, and in the end I get annoyed and go play something else.

  • By lumping them all into the same category, it gives credibility to “religion”.

When you have a panel where “A priest, a rabbi, and a mullah discus spirituality”, it’s a level playing field, everyone is just there to compare notes on their LARPing rules.

If an atheist or a scientist join the panel, you now have an emperors new clothes situation, “Yeah, I don’t have all the answers, but more importantly, neither do they, and I’m not claiming to. Here are the facts and evidence as it is currently understood, and what that might mean”.

When you call atheism or science or woke a religion, they are trying to trap you by saying “ha! Your belief is just as meaningless as I mine is! We’re all equal and subjective rules apply”.

  • I can for sure see both sides of this one. I had ditched all other social media years ago, and baconreader was my one guilty pleasure.

If I had my phone in my hand, I was catching up with other old skaters like myself, reading about the latest trends in tech, or browsing the daily news.

The tag line of “Front page of the internet” was quite literally true for me. That was the portal through which I found content.

In the weeks leading up to the June 30th, I felt a strong sadness, what was I going to do with my screen time? I had created a very custom space using baconreader that neither the reddit app, or to be fair, Lemmy, could provide.

While I am really enjoying learning about Lemmy, and I feel the quality of the post and comments here are far better, it’s going to take time to find and/or develop those niche communities again.

I do however agree, and the ex analogy is spot on, that the last thing I want is for this community to just be a bitch fest about what once was.

Give people a bit of time to vent, it hasn’t even been a week since a decades long experience came crashing to a halt through no fault of ours.
