Neiche application like old industrial equipment. Sure 90% of it is well documented and properly sourced. Still there’s always that one piece of equipment purchasing got because it was cheap with no documentation and just a safety placard from the 90s. Adding to your examples in the cannon of Star Trek the teleporter is not a murder machine, except for all those transporter accidents. In “Daedalus” (ENT) the creator of the teleporter somehow proved it, even if not every officer believes that yet.

I don’t think many people are but enough are and they’re the ones with political influence. Not to defend Elizabeth Homes but why Elon Musk gets away with it is sexism, and being able to deliver on the odd promise then highlighting that success to cover for his failures.
