I don’t know Lawful Neutral or Neutral Evil
Fake news, thinking about baseball would make Sisko misfire instantly
I thought it was the dentist scene from Little Shop of Horrors, but I think that one has another actor that looks kind of similar
I think you’re being overly simplistic - sure, ideas and debates have a place in politics. And “political power flows out of the barrel of a gun” doesn’t mean “Whoever has the most guns wins” (though this is the case most of the time) - but it does mean that a group with no guns has no power.
Like the other commenter said, the quote is partially metaphorical - it just means that force is the basis of political power. The people willing and able to apply the most force will almost always win in the end.
Think about in America. If, tomorrow, 75% of Americans were in favor of abolishing the police, would it happen? Maybe, but probably not - because the people with political power, the people with guns and the will to use them (cops, troops, fascists, small business tyrants) support the police.
History is shaped by material conditions; ideas play a part in this, but material interest is the primary driving force.
Mao Zedong; his quote was “Political power flows out of the barrel of a gun.”
The quote is not a moral statement or a call to action, but a scientific analysis of Historical Materialism: the Chinese civil war was not fought with ballots or debates, it was fought with guns, on both sides.
Ultimately, the people with the guns hold all political power in society.
People who get mad at this episode because “That’s not how evolution works!” miss the point of Star Trek.
Chronotons and dilithium crystals also don’t exist. The science of Star Trek only exists to facilitate interesting stories, involving character drama and philosophical quandaries.
First blocking Hexbear, now blocking dbzer0. Obviously the Lemmy.world admins are taking the “lemmy.world being so big is bad for the Fediverse and people should move to smaller instances” critiques to heart and trying to incentive users to move
One benefit the Fediverse has over a centralized site is that, as long as you set the same display name and avatar, most people will recognize you after a migration. For example, I know a few fellow Lemmygrad guys who have alternate, identical Lemmy.ml accounts for posting on instances that block Lemmygrad, and you can’t even tell which account they’re using unless you visit their page.
I work in the meat department and you cannot imagine how often I get someone from a different part of the store bringing me something (like a pet bringing me a present) like “Oh yeah I found this 10 lb. pork butt behind the cheezits” or “This tenderloin fell behind the register and we only noticed it because it started to smell” (real stories)
Keep in mind one of the biggest parts of Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is funding Charter Schools (a type of private school). The foundation is so large they functionally set the curriculum in our school system (since schools that don’t follow their curriculum don’t get funding).
It’s not about charity, it’s about privatization and control.
The Holocaust happened. The Armenian Genocide happened. Manifest Destiny happened.
The Ughyr detention centers, whatever you think of them, do not constitute a genocide. The Ukrainian Famine was a tragic loss of life, and perhaps the Bolsheviks could have done more to prevent it, but it was not an attempted extermination of the Ukrainian people. And don’t even get me started on Rwanda.
And Liberals routinely deny genocide in Palestine and Kashmir because it is politically expedient.
A blanket reproachment of “Genocide Denial” ignores the fact that sometimes, a genocide is claimed where one does not exist. I’m sure you accept that “White Genocide”, especially wrt South Africa, is a conspiracy theory with no legitimacy. Why do you not give the same benefit of the doubt to China, or the USSR?
I’m part of a coalition trying to prevent a private equity firm from buying out a local nonprofit hospital and using AI to “Improve efficiency” is one of their plans that we’ve had to study (done by people much more competent than I).
The main thing they plan to use AI for is filling out paperwork - nurses will record their introductory interviews with patients and the AI (basically, speech recognition + knowing what fields to fill out for certain information) will automatically fill out that patient’s chart.
I’m sure they’re planning on using AI for other purposes as well, but this is the most prevalent use - speech recognition and filling out charts automatically.
