I did the same but instead it was someone’s cigarette smoke. Normally I don’t really care if someone wants to smoke their cigs, but when the cloud is wafting directly into my house it suddenly annoys the ever living fuck out of me.

Yeah fair enough, same shit where I work too. It’s a little crazy how protective they are of their proprietary secrets, but they just straight up rely on microsoft to handle all the data, be it via email, cloud services, or that Sharepoint shit. I wonder how many companies would have their secrets exposed if that data was ever stolen from the MS servers?

Apple has never wanted to play ball with the gaming community either, look no further than the lawsuits Epic is waging on them over the app store. Apple loves their closed ecosystem, and giving Valve any room for a foothold is counter to their strategy. There is no incentive for apple to court getting steam on their machines, and with such a small player base valve has no incentive either.

When it comes to enshittification Valve is a shining beacon resisting the tide of trends. No paying for online play. Free cloud saves. An open ecosystem with marketing methods that give everyone a chance in the spotlight, regardless of AAA status. No exclusivity for games (Epic can fucking suck it for bringing that bullshit to PC). Instead of squashing competition with shit business practices like Epic and Apple they encourage competition! They purposefully made SteamOS open source so that other companies can easily release portable PC gaming products!! They created controller compatibility when Microsoft wouldn’t, notably for playstation controllers while still releasing their own Steam controller. They created one of the first and only digital goods return policies, and frequently accept returns beyond the time limit. No one else in this industry is doing things like that. Epic wants to break in with subversive tactics while Valve is continuously improving the landscape for gamers, developers, and hardware makers. As long as Gabe Newell is alive we are in safe hands.

That said, who knows what happens when he dies? Everything is still just a license, so check out GOG for DRM free goods while you can. Buy things on other stores when they’re cheap so you have a distributed library. Maybe the ticking time bomb is there, but for the moment Valve is the last gaming company that isnt trying to fuck us on a daily basis, and I will continue to support that as long as that remains true.

Nothing more specific than just the learning curve. Having to use the terminal, learn commands, etc. Just basic program installation requires me to look up how to do it. I’m currently learning via my steamdeck too, so cumbersome typing doesnt help matters, but I plan on installing on a desktop PC so I can experiment more easily. Picking a distro can be complicated too - I think I just want to use the same as what’s on the Steamdeck but I need to do research to figure out if I should. That research alone is a bit of the pain in the ass. I can do it, but I needed to be motivated but corporate bullshit to actually do it.

Learning Linux is a pain in the ass. The line is where Windows becomes less and less convenient until it is more of a pain in the ass than Linux. It’s a blurry line for some people, but for me the combination of hiding settings so I need to enter the fucking registry to change them and then serving me pop up ads on my own machine crossed the line.

But fucking hell learning linux is still a pain in the ass.

It absolutely is a valid business strategy, Apple has been winning with this strategy for like 15-20 years now. Their shit IS Fisher Price computers and Fisher Price phones and ALWAYS HAS BEEN. Most people are fucking dumb and it is designed specifically for them. So for the love of god go buy something else. Please. From Apple’s perspective it’s not shitty, it’s part of their brand. Apple products are all about stupid proofing. Its hard to fuck it up, its hard to download a malicious app or virus. Preventing side loading protects people who don’t know what side loading is. Believe it or not that’s the majority of users. Side loading wont effect profits but thats because the large majority of their customer base will never use it. Those of us who want it are a vocal minority trying to screw up their entire business strategy, so of course they won’t give it to us unless they are forced to do so.

Duckduckgo is a firefox addon for desktop. On iOS it utilizes a fork of Safari.

The others I’m not sure about, but a quick search shows me that I gotta delete Brave. Damn. Google is fucking insidious

I have yet to try the last two. I really enjoy duckduckgo on my phone, but I know there was some controversy. I guess I’m lazy but I love the fire button that burns away all your open tabs and history in one click. Started using Brave recently and I kind of enjoy how it reports how much stuff its blocked and the breakdown of what it all is. I have had no noticeable issues with either one.
