Single-shaming is real. It’s particularly nasty because it can often come from family, friends, and strangers alike. And the media does it constantly.

Most governments are set up to support and value married folks with tax breaks and incentives, fuck everybody else.

Guess who’s less likely to be able to buy even a small house because you need at least two huge incomes these days to even qualify? That’s right, single people.

I’ve been single for about a decade, and I’m overall pretty happy. Every once in a while I do find myself in a self-inflicted shame spiral, but I always tell myself “Bertram, this is your life, live it however you want to live it.”

That said, I’m not opposed to finding a partner, somehow, but I’ve built a nice little life for myself so it’s just not a priority. Especially because I wouldn’t even know where to start…

  • This is such a great description, and captures why I love DS9 so much. I think the fact that it doesn’t really take place in the Federation, and that the overarching plot is moved along by external forces from an entirely different quadrant, gives it the space to thoughtfully explore the depths of a well-intentioned yet exclusionary post-scarcity utopia from a darker perspective. Especially how the Federation’s ideals interact with the aftermath of a very familiar military occupation on Bajor at the same time as it stokes an external threat from an unfamiliar ‘other’ through the Dominion/Founders. And all of that is accomplished through some of the best character development of any show I’ve seen.

  • She once balanced a phaser between two random shuttle components to rig up an ad-hoc force field that saved her and the shuttle crew from being blown out into space. And she managed to save the shuttle, a shuttle she had just finished to help design and build in a matter of weeks. The best chief engineer in starfleet.

I’m deep into a long overdue Voyager rewatch, and forgot how awesome she was.
