Within any given tier of gaming hardware*, the main advantage of consoles is not price, but simplicity: They’re convenient and easy. They consume very little extra space (no dedicated monitor/speakers/keyboard/mouse) and require practically no technical knowledge or setup/tuning/troubleshooting effort.

But PC gamers get value for their efforts. The vastly larger pool of games and greater variety in hardware options are part of that value, but there is also the total cost of ownership: PC games tend to go on sale for lower prices, and hardware upgrades can be done incrementally (ship of theseus style). Over the course of 10 years or so, that translates to either more fun or more money left to spend on other things. Or both.

Perhaps this decade’s painful rise in hardware costs is making more people willing to invest a bit of effort in exchange for a gaming PC’s better long-term value compared to a console.

*(I mention hardware tiers because it doesn’t make sense to compare a Nintendo Wii to a high-end Radeon or GeForce PC, of course.)

What was the trouble with Akregator? I think recent versions have dark mode, and older versions could be made dark with the right style sheets applied.

It’s not a perfect fit for me, but it works well enough that I stopped hunting for something better.

In gaming circles, Matrix is to Discord as Lemmy is to Reddit: tiny. You’re unlikely to find well-established rooms for niche topics, so you would have to either join an existing barely-used room, or start a new one yourself.

The good news is that, with so many people leaving Discord right now, promoting a small room could easily multiply its population and boost its activity. You might even consider talking to moderators of niche Discord channels to see if they’re interested in migrating with you.

Magic Wormhole comes close. I don’t think it 100% peer-to-peer since there’s a coordination server, but that’s not so different to most P2P programs on the internet, which need something like a STUN or TURN server (or port mapping) to get around NAT.

Not only because it’s a single point of failure, but also because it’s a single point of surveillance.

Cloudflare can read and even modify the communications everyone has with sites behind its HTTPS service. And it can monitor people’s browsing through its DNS-over-HTTP service. And it can fingerprint people’s browsers through any of its services that use JavaScript, such as its CAPTCHA-like thing.

Cloudflare has become a privacy problem approaching that of Google. I would be happy to see the web collectively abandon its services, in favour of many smaller providers.

A lot of the time it fizzles out or doesn’t stand up to any kind of real scrutiny.

Which times, specifically?

More importantly, it looks like Gamers Nexus (no apostrophe) is crowdfunding the deeper investigation that they want to do.

I’m inclined to think contributing to this journalism would be worthwhile.

Why Deno?

Deno is sandboxed by default and does not allow filesystem or network access.

I’m glad to see they’re using the safety-focused option by default.
