Technology@beehaw.org•Europeans set to launch an alternative to X. It’s called W
1·5 months agoThis is what’s frustrating me the most.
We have a working infrastructure. It’s open source. Please adopt.

Technology@beehaw.org•Cloudflare apologises for outage which took down X and ChatGPT
8·7 months agoI’m curious how much internet traffic gets lost when something like ChatGPT gets taken down.
Like, all those bots…how will they post garbage?

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Internet Explorer vs. Murder Rate
4·8 months agoI remember having to write so much bullshit code to make it look right on IE. I think by 2018, I got fed up with it and put it in my contract that I don’t code for IE. And to my surprise, most companies were like, “Yeah we don’t give a fuck about those users either.” Either their metrics showed that IE users weren’t buying, or they were a small segment not worth supporting.
And I never looked back.

13·8 months agoDoesn’t the UK require that shit now?
And I know a bunch of US states require it when you stumble on a tit.
Either way, VPNs making bank right now.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Game Pass Price Hike Announced, Will Cost $30/Month For Ultimate
5·8 months agoI was obsessed with Game Pass during the start of the pandemic. There was a dozen games I wanted and I could get PC Game Pass for like $30 for six months, versus buying a single game for $30.
Then Steam Deck came out and suddenly all my money went back to Steam.

Programming@programming.dev•Let's Make Sure Github Doesn't Become the only Option - Edward Loveall
3·9 months agoIt was a shit show before GitHub. I used to email code. I used to have to find random IRC rooms, follow random contributor guides, or beg for access. I remember one project required me to download some torrent bullshit just so I can submit my patch.
As a contributor, I can’t go back to creating multiple accounts and trying to figure out how the hell I give you code.
I don’t care if GitHub is the defacto for open-source projects, as long as there are competitors and mirrors.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Vibe coding is great for MVP's
3·9 months agoI took it for a test run to build out a API as a proof of concept to my superiors to show what we can do.
I then started on a real version, saving the vibe code version as a backup in case I could cherrypick code.
After recreating the basic functionality again but properly, I looked at the vibe coded project and threw it in the trash. Had zero reusability.

Technology@beehaw.org•Proton Mail Suspended Journalist Accounts at Request of Cybersecurity Agency
15·9 months agoIn a response to the backlash, Proton’s official account stated that the company did not intentionally block journalists’ accounts and suggested that the situation had been “blown out of proportion.” However, the lack of clarity surrounding the decision-making process has left many, including the affected journalists, seeking answers. Proton’s founder, Andy Yen, later announced that the accounts had been reinstated but did not clarify the reasons behind the initial suspensions or the subsequent reinstatement.
So did Proton mail act on their own, or did they get a gun to their head to disable? Because Proton continues to act holier than thou about privacy and only caving if there’s a lot of evidence. But here is ANOTHER example of hypocrisy.
I downloaded a DOS game a few years back that had security questions like:
- Who is the shortstop for this 1978 World Series Team?
- What was this actor’s favorite lunch while on the set of this 1979 film?
- What is the name of this politician who made an appearance on this 1984 sitcom?

Laravel brought life back to PHP for me. It’s elegant. I feels like speaking.
And PHP 8 is light-years away from the garbage I grew up on.

Gaming@beehaw.org•Microsoft to lay off about 9,000 employees in latest round [Seattle Times]
3·11 months agoMaybe I was stupid to believe that they’ll slow down the Xbox console to go extremely hard on Xbox/PC Game Pass and push to be the Netflix of PC games.
But these are software layoffs.
